GHERKINS FOR YOUR GARDEN

This native variety (Melothria pendula) of Mexican Sour Gherkin aka Mouse Melon aka Cucamelon is known for its grape-sized, watermelon-like fruits that taste like a cucumber with a sour, citrusy twist and are eaten with the skin on. These heat-loving plants are an easy-to-grow edible curiosity perfect for snacking, salads, garnishes, and pickling.

Here in the South, these are a fast-growing favorite that produce up until the first frost and comes back year after year on its own. I haven’t found anything in nature that kills it yet – not even the typical cucurbit killers like vine borers and squash beetles. Some people might consider them invasive, but I like to be invaded by free food so I’m not some people🤷🏾‍♀️. These grow best in full sun with a trellis, twine, netting, or teepee for support as its delicate, hair-like vines can grow up to 10 feet long.

EMAIL ME to add gherkins to your garden🙂

Note: Cucamelons will not cross with other cucumber varieties. Despite being a member of the Cucurbitaceae family, they are part of an entirely different plant genus and are only distantly related to cucumbers.
