EGYPTIAN WALKING ONIONS

I’ve, honestly, never seen or tasted anything like them. Sure, if you squint right, they kinda look like a cross between a chive and a leek, but that’s where the similarities end, in my opinion. Egyptian Walking Onions (also known as “Tree Onions”) are a potent and prolific perennial allium plant that I never want to be without. Egyptian Walking Onions are nutrient-dense powerhouses that bolster the immune system and fight inflammation. Their long green stalks can be chopped and enjoyed as green onions with a strong onion taste like a bulb yellow onion. [*clears throat] When I say the green stalks grow “long”, I mean – almost as long as my arm!

Each Spring, the plants start kicking out these funky baby bulb clusters called top sets. This is how they “walk” all over a garden – spreading wildly.

If given full sun and room to roam, Egyptian Walking Onions will consistently produce and “walk” for decades. I’ve snipped some top sets to be able to plug them into other places around the farm and will also be dividing my established plants in the Fall. I want to have Egyptian Walking Onions EVERYWHERE. Trust that I do mean that very literally.
