Patience has never been my strength. Becoming a farmer has definitely forced my growth in this area since all I can do is put a seed in the soil and WAIT. In the beginning, I felt like everything took FOR-EVER to grow. That was until I began expanding my crops and realized that some crops actually do take close to forever to grow😅.
Last year, I naively decided that I wanted to grow ginger because it’s a crop that I appreciate for its flavor and many medicinal benefits, but am rarely willing (or able) to get it in the grocery stores. It’s a good thing I just jumped into growing it before learning that ginger can take up to 1 year to reach harvest. Had I known this going in, I likely would have chosen not to grow it.
After harvesting my first farm fresh ginger though, I’M HOOKED.
The ginger plants looked beautiful while growing (forever😆). I loved brushing against the cluster of greenstalks and getting a big whiff of ginger throughout the day. I had no idea that below the soil, something even more beautiful was in the making.

Ginger is, literally, one of the most gorgeous things I’ve ever grown with its tender, pink flesh and tall, palm frond-like greenery (which is also edible). The taste of this seasonal treasure is sweet, juicy, and mild – NOTHING like the dry, gnarled roots found in the grocery store. I can never go back.
I’ve got my seed ginger curing and will be planting 10x more ginger this next time around. Never thought I’d be so excited to wait forever💕.
