THIS MONTH AT BEE SCHOOL

It’s been so fun to see our bees ever-present on the farm this month. Before, I’d have to go to the hive to see them. Now, I see them all over the farm! They’ve, of course, been busy pollinating flower blooms. The foragers of the bunch have also been fanatically buzzing around the farm harvesting water.

We recently installed an air conditioner window unit as a part of an infrastructure improvement project (likely to be shared in the future). This has become THE SPOT for our bees! Watch them gathering A/C condensation drippings in the video below.

All creatures need water – especially in the hot summer months – and bees are no exception. Foraging honeybees collect water to dilute honey, regulate humidity, and cool the hive. Honeybees use the collected water to cool down the hive by, basically, becoming little swamp coolers. They regurgitate the water onto the inner lid of the hive and fan it vigorously with their wings to create a cool breeze that circulates through the hive. Simply AMAZING. Just when you thought honeybees couldn’t get any cooler, right?! 😉
