THIS MONTH AT BEE SCHOOL

I learned how to light + maintain the bee smoker (…but wasn’t very good at doing it. LOL).
Me and the hens cleaned + restored some old hive frames to be reused in future hives.
This was the day I proudly lit + maintained the smoker by myself.
I was introduced to an old Seeley book I haven’t read yet, but will.
I experienced an oxalic acid mite treatment and quickly removed it from my narrowing list of “organic” pest treatments.
I learned the difference between a bee package and nuc.
We cracked into an abandoned beehive to assess the situation.
The colony was going strong and had produced a lot of (yummy) honeycomb in the absence of human intervention.
I helped to relocate these bees into a new hive and watched in awe as they made their way inside their new home.

(I also finished reading “Honeybee Democracy” and “Following the Wild Bees” by Thomas Seeley.)

There’s now less than 4 months until our bees move onto the farm! I’ve still got a lot to do and learn in preparation of their arrival, but I’m feeling more confident and equipped each month.

I can’t wait to dive into the learning experiences in store for December 🙂
